For today, 9 August 2012, enjoy 18% off Caltex fuel prices.
While this may not be a totally ‘wow’ deal for some people as clever use of a combination of petrol plus credit card may offer similar advantages (minus the expected queue), a deal is still a deal.
This is especially so for people who do not use or do not hold credit cards and usually are not able to take advantage of credit card discounts for petrol.
Personally, I feel this is still worth looking into (if you can beat the crowd). And the following would be how I would use it to extract more benefits. There would be no point in using cards that gives high upfront petrol discounts since the additional discounts in this case are not applicable with another promotion. So I’d choose to pay with a card that offers high rebate structure (since this benefit is given by the bank, not offered by the petrol stations), so that I’ll be able to get more than 18% off, taking into account the rebates gotten back.
By my calculations, if your card offers 5% cashback for petrol spending. If you topped up $10 worth of petrol tomorrow, you’ll pay $8.20 due to the 18% discount. And with this net petrol spend of $8.20, 5% cashback would amount to $0.41 of cashback. So the total savings would be $1.80+$0.41=$2.21, equivalent to a 22.10% discount.
At 22% discount, I believe this is among the higher tiers of discounts you can get for petrol spending. And again, my calculation may differ from yours depending on the card you use and the privileges it offers.
You can reap more benefits out of a credit card, only if you know how to use them.
